Reflections on Leadership

Here is an excerpt from my reflective essay. I've chosen to share the first paragraph because it is the most personal. This is module has left quite an impression on me...so here goes!

Leadership has always been an abstract, very far reaching concept to me because I never envisioned that I could and would one day lead. I have always stood out in small, intimate settings and that was within my comfort zone and as far as I was willing to go. The reasoning behind this is that through conditioning from the media, and other peoples’ opinions, I had very negative ideas about people in leadership positions as well as the positions themselves. Firstly, I thought that people in those positions were born great and that their personalities often times were very aggressive, impolite and unethical. Secondly, I was under the impression that the positions themselves were stressful, with long hours of work and little down time to enjoy the financial rewards that would inevitably come.

After the Leadership and Human Resource Management Module I can now say that a great majority of the stereotypes I once believed are not true and that I can inform myself and challenge what I hear by not simply taking other peoples’ opinions to be the generalization. It is only through reconditioning and an awakening to the truth that I am able to assert boldly that leaders can be nurtured and that I am a leader in my own right and will need to nurture my leadership skills. This essay therefore outlines the experiences I had during the module that encouraged this conclusion. This is a major step for me because I was sure I could lead in my own familial circle but not necessarily lead those who did not care for me because of reasons motivated by fear. I truly believe that Leadership is about the choices I make and therefore it has to be my way of life, my lifestyle.

Peace,
Chinyere.
